FAQ

What is a MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The scanner is a powerful magnet that uses radiology to take thinly sliced images of a specific region of the body. This creates detailed images of the afflicted region so that the doctor can get an accurate picture inside the body.

What is the difference between open and closed MRI?

A closed MRI is a large machine where a patient goes into a tube in order to be centered in the magnet to take the images. An open MRI does not have a tunnel, but an open space that a patient is positioned to get centered in the magnet. This prevents any discomfort that one might feel being put into a small space. Stetson Powell Orthopedics has an open MRI and is happy to share this more comfortable experience with their patients.

What kind of scans can be performed?

Stetson Powell Orthopedics specializes in the knee, shoulder and elbow. The machine, however, can scan the foot, ankle, knee, arthrogram knee, hip, lumbar spine, shoulder, arthrogram shoulder, elbow, arthrogram elbow, and the wrist. With the powerful Open MRI in office Stetson Powell Orthopedics is able to make all diagnosis for the majority of extremities in a comfortable patient setting.

Are there any risks involved when undergoing a MRI?

Stetson Powell Orthopedics put patients through an extensive pre screening process to make sure that all people getting MRIs are healthy and they will not be at risk. All persons with metal objects in the body are at risk in an MRI and should not receive an MRI without consent from their physician. A patient is not advised to go into an MRI if the patient has had any artificial heat valves, pacemaker or implantable heart defibrillator. If you are pregnant you should ask your physician if it is safe for you to get a MRI. It is also important to disclose any medical information that you feel might be pertinent before getting your MRI Scan. The knowledgeable staff at Stetson Powell Orthopedics will be happy to answer any and all of your questions.

What do I wear when getting my MRI?

Stetson Powell Orthopedics suggests that all patients wear loose fitting clothing. Gym wear is usually ideal for any MRI. Avoid all cloths and undergarments that may have metal. If the clothing has metal you may be asked to remove the article to prevent any harm.
