Shoulder Fractures Evaluation
Evaluating a Possible Shoulder Fracture
One of the first things that your doctor will do when evaluating a shoulder fracture is x-ray the injured area. Your doctor will examine your arm, shoulder, upper back, and chest areas. They will also ask you a series of questions about your past medical history related to your shoulder and other applicable areas. If a shoulder fracture is present, your doctor will discuss corrective options.
The majority of shoulder fractures do not require surgical treatment. Most two-part and the majority of three-part fractures are usually treated by placing the arm in a sling for a period of weeks and working on exercises to strengthen the shoulder. With many three and all four-part fractures the doctor may recommend having shoulder replacement surgery or surgical repair if other treatment options fail to provide pain relief.
