Shoulder Fractures Evaluation

Evaluating a Possible Shoulder Fracture

One of the first things that your doctor will do when evaluating a shoulder fracture is x-ray the injured area. Your doctor will examine your arm, shoulder, upper back, and chest areas. They will also ask you a series of questions about your past medical history related to your shoulder and other applicable areas. If a shoulder fracture is present, your doctor will discuss corrective options.

The majority of shoulder fractures do not require surgical treatment. Most two-part and the majority of three-part fractures are usually treated by placing the arm in a sling for a period of weeks and working on exercises to strengthen the shoulder. With many three and all four-part fractures the doctor may recommend having shoulder replacement surgery or surgical repair if other treatment options fail to provide pain relief.

If shoulder replacement surgery is the treatment option your doctor recommends, he will then select an implant that meets your needs. Your surgeon will choose an implant, which he/she feels will restore proper movement, achieve adequate range of motion, and alleviate pain and discomfort.

Once the decision is made to proceed with shoulder replacement surgery, there are several things that may need to be done. Your orthopaedic surgeon may suggest a complete physical examination by your medical or family doctor. This is to ensure that you are in the best possible condition to undergo the operation. You may also need to spend time with the physical therapist that will be managing your rehabilitation after the shoulder replacement surgery.

An assessment will also be made to determine what you may need to have at home once you're released from the hospital. On the day of your surgery, you will probably be admitted to the hospital early in the morning. You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.
